HINTS & TIPS --
THE ROLE OF THE INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL
***************************************************************

In January, I attended the??11th Information Online Conference and Exhibition in Sydney, organised by the Information Specialists Group of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA).?? After a stimulating three days, the closing session featured??a panel of eminent speakers from different sectors in the information industry, who gave their unique insight into what they believe it takes to be a true information professional.?? I??share my summarised notes with you...

GETTING TO KNOW...YOUR QUANTUM2 COACH
************************************************************
??
As part of getting to know us all a little bit better, this month, we introduce a periodic feature interview with our Quantum2 coaches around the world.?? We start with... Merce ALBA of Spain, who is based in our Barcelona office.

MERCE ALBA?? holds a master's degree in library sciences and a post-degree in sales, and is now studying for a post-degree in business management??and has been at Dialog for seven years.??????

How did you come to join Dialog?
A????teacher at??my?? library school in Barcelona planted the idea in my mind through a??questionnaire on Databases which we were asked to complete. About nine months later, with this still fresh on my mind, I learned there was a vacancy at the Dialog office in Barcelona and so I applied.

What are your key responsibilities?
Developing big customer accounts in Northern and Eastern Spain and Portugal, and bringing in new customers.????????I also coordinate the Spanish Team and oversee training for our customers, including participating in and presenting the Quantum2 programme.

What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?
Direct contact with clients, which gives me firsthand, up-to-date information on the sector. More specifically, what I like most is finding solutions for them in a partnering effort.????I also love learning new things every day.??

What have you found most challenging about your job?
I would have to say keeping up to date.

How do you balance work and personal life?
It is hard when I travel, because I spend nights and even weekends away from home. But when I am in Barcelona it's not difficult,??as I try to manage my time in the office so I don't??stay??late each day.

What do you do for entertainment, activities or hobbies outside of work?
My friends are my first priority.????I love nature, especially the sea, and the mountains where I ski in the wintertime. I am also learning to play golf now. In general, I like outside activities and travelling when money permits.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be an airplane pilot.

What three words would you use to describe yourself today?
Happy, self-demanding and generous.

What are your plans for the future?
Developing my career, travelling to exotic places, and being the happiest person in the world.

What is your favorite book?
Alice in Wonderland. Like Alice, I try to "believe three impossible things before breakfast!"

What qualities do you admire most in a person?
Sincerity, empathy and strength.
