Quantum2 Highlights
A newsletter of the Dialog leadership development program for information professionals
Dear Quantum2 Member...
As the holidays approach, many of us are looking
back at the objectives we set for the year and checking
our progress against those goals. Did we follow up
on that marketing plan we started, collect the data
on a continual basis to prove our ROI, implement
the new best practice that we spent weeks researching,
build new skills. In other words, at year end, can
we show our value to senior management?
While you're in this evaluation mode, why
not set aside some time to attend a Quantum2 Web
session? In the next six months we are offering several
new sessions at multiple times during the day to
better suit your needs. Take a look at the sessions
listed below to choose something appropriate to support
your goals and sign up today.

Linda Pauloski
At Dofasco Inc., one of Canada's leading
steel producers, Linda Pauloski, Manager, Library
Resource Centre (LRC), emphasizes that the success
of the LRC depends on the "energy and enthusiasm
of the whole LRC team." There are two main
ways that Linda and her staff see themselves impacting
Dofasco. They seek to reduce uncertainty around decision
making and help their customers make decisions more
quickly. In addition, the LRC staff plays a networking
role in which they encourage communication and the
re-use of knowledge to reduce duplication.

The Power Map: How to Target a Potential
Champion
The
point of building relationships with important
people is that your champion or mentor, who has
a great deal of respect for your capabilities,
can be influenced to help get you invited to join
in planning sessions for organizational projects,
sponsor your initiatives, make you become valuable
in assisting with strategic decisions. Most information
professionals who already do this well claim that
not only should you have more than one champion,
you should continually be cultivating new ones
as organizations change so quickly nowadays. But
exactly how do you go about finding a champion
in your organization?
I was at the LMD consulting luncheon in New York,
and a suggestion made by the speaker was to build
a "power map" of your organization to
show the formal and informal ways power exists in
the company. To do this, use an organization chart
format, but arrange the people by where they fit
based on a specific decision or project. For instance,
new product decisions may be determined by strategic
marketing rather than product development. Then,
using that power map and your knowledge of the current
environment in which you work, approach your targeted
champion.
