Quantum2 Topic of the Month
Strategic Planning: Some Basics

The ability to think strategically is one of those essential skills for success. To create a strategic plan, you must take in all the information around you — not only what's happening within your company, but what's happening in your markets and with your competitors — and turn that information into a plan that will help you reach your goals.

A simple way to approach this is in terms of answering the five W's — who, what, when, where and why.

  • Who are we?

Look to your mission statement that describes why you exist and how you plan to succeed in satisfying customers.

  • What are we doing now?
  • Why are we doing what we're doing?

Reviewing your products and services, as well as customer needs, will help determine what you are currently doing and why. Along the way, examine not only the strengths and weaknesses of your information center, but the opportunities and threats that exist in the organization. This analysis will help you determine the issues to be addressed when creating your goals and objectives.

  • Where do we want to be in the future?

Your vision statement of your specific purpose and what you will be when you achieve your goals and objectives will point to where you want to be in the future.

  • When and how do we get there?

Your goals and objectives will inform the measurable activities and tasks that must be completed, portraying when and how you will get to your future.

We hope this brief hint of strategic planning will whet your appetite for more. For those of you in London, we will be conducting a workshop on this topic. And throughout the coming year we will continue to address this issue.
