Dear Quantum2 Member...

As we move forward with a new phase at Dialog, products and programs to support information professionals remain at the core of our mission. At recent customers meetings and Updates, we've been very pleased to hear how much Quantum2 and the Graduate Education Program are appreciated in the customer community. As we focus our own planning to address new opportunities, it seems timely to focus this issue of the Quantum2 newsletter on strategic planning. Read on for more.

In this issue:

Nominate a Quantum2 InfoStar

It’s time again to nominate an information professional you know (maybe yourself!), who is an inspiring example of creativity and innovation. InfoStars are enthusiastic and positive about the value and future of information services regardless of their level within their organizations, and act as catalysts for change to champion and support their information centre. Through their example and initiatives, their stories enable them to serve as role models for others.

Dialog is now seeking nominations in EMEA-AP for the InfoStar Awards, to be announced at the forthcoming ONLINE Conference in London in December.

Quantum2 Topic of the Month — Basics of Strategic Planning

Creating a strategic plan consists of seven fundamental steps. However, the process is a continuous one and the first and last steps aren’t necessarily distinct. These steps need to cover four key elements among them, the mission, vision, positioning and alliances.

Typically, the process begins when the need for strategic planning is identified and a planning team is put together. It approaches some point of closure when feedback is gathered in the follow-up phase. Follow-up and feedback can beget new or additional actions to make the strategic plan more effective and the process then begins anew.

No step is more important in strategic planning than the need for communication.

Communication is vital because key to the process is “strategic positioning”, which involves communicating to key stakeholders a clear understanding of the information center strategies that exhibit, in turn, an understanding of and alignment with the strategies of the organization. By contributing to the competitive advantage of an organization, the information center is positioned as vital to the customer. According to David Penniman in his article, Strategic Positioning of Information Services in a Competitive Environment, “If you are not perceived as vital by your customer, then you are not strategically positioned for survival.” ( American Society for Information Science. Apr/May 1997).
